Joseph Vorgity White Lines

An exploration of white line woodblock prints

White line woodblock prints were first created in Provincetown, MA in 1915. Artists has learned Japanese moku hanga technique and found the multi-block and unique registration difficult. White line woodblock print are full colored and are painstakingly printed one at a tome from one matrix block. The white line carved into the block separates the design of the block and leaves a unifying patten on the print. The print areas are hand rendered with water color giving the visual quality of paintings. Joseph learned the technique in 1982 from Ferol Sibley Warthen who was a student of Blanche Lazzeli.
