Power Hour of a Power Plant: The Edison Downtown
|
On February 9th, the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles gained a new jewel to its ever burgeoning nightlife scene. The Higgins Building opened the doors of its lavish high-ceilinged basement as The Edison Downtown, a genius amalgamation of industrial past, artistic present and an inspiring future.
Black, Bronze and Classy All Over The entrance seems modest, off of a small alley with an open air smoking patio and a bouncer to greet you. Then down the grand staircase you go to enter the black and bronze hued lounge below, reminiscent of an era gone by. The large rectangular bar dominates the main room, though patrons cannot help but be lured to the swanky sofas and intimate nooks of the expansive space. Some historic relics remain intact, like in the aptly named Generator Lounge where generators from L.A.'s first private power plant amuse happy cocktail canoodlers. The grand historic air about the lounge is softened by a subtle gothic overtone. Faux candelabras and lanterns dimly drench the facade with a warmer feel than it might otherwise exude and a projection displays a reel of historic, mashed up footage above a juke box full of everything but top 40. Downtown on the Upswing The Edison Downtown is an excellent reason for the downtown commuters to stay put after work and for everyone else to come to this special section of Los Angeles and put up their feet. A full dining menu of classic American dishes and appetizers will be offered within the month and Wednesday nights will offer live jazz. The weekend rotates funky DJs and dancers with live bands and ample space for special events. Cocktail hour from 5 to 8p.m. is truly a joyous, dimly lit escape from the fluorescent doldrums of the office. Enjoy this swanky notch in the neo-historic nightlife of Downtown for yourself. The Edison is going to become a cornerstone in the fledgling but growing Downtown nightlife scene, attracting the young, the successful and those in desperate need of a bit more class than Hollywood could ever offer. review by Erika Leigh |
The Rebirth of Avalon: An L.A. Anomaly
So Spundae has left the building 'Circus Disco, that is' and now Avalon seems to have a stronger hold on Los Angeles nightlife than ever before. A slow start to the New Year with new promoters and a less than notable DJ lineup made for some serious catch-up work for the veteran megaclub. Despite the struggles, Avalon has proven once again that indeed, change is good. Miami sound, New York cool and Euro flair are blending gracefully with the good-vibe crowd that only Los Angeles can provide.
Avaland is the self-promoted Saturday night at Avalon...
Avalon
Three venues under one roof voted among the top 3 nightlife establishments in the nation (#1 venue in Los Angeles) provides modern glamour in an historic trajectory of entertainment expertise.
79 years, 5 name changes, and reels of construction tape has brought us right back where we’ve started- looking for the next big thing. Hollywood nightclubs have long been the buzz among nightcrawlers seeking out a place large enough cater to all their nightlife needs. Party-goers need not look too far. Starting on Friday nights, Avalon’s 1485 space capacity showcases the latest in noteworthy music- ranging from dance to top 40 and R&B hits. Get there late and continue the party inside the Spider Club, the upstairs VIP lounge open to anyone interested in being treated like a star. Come Saturday, Avalon boasts the best dance promotion this side of the La Brea tar pits, welcoming with open arms such world-renowned djs as Sasha, Digweed, and Paul Oakenfold. Avaland is certainly a wonderland for all those Alice’s out there looking to slide spontaneously down an unknown rabbit hole. There’s even a place to fuel up before or after your dancing experience. Honey, inside Avalon, offers two menus- dinner and late night- to keep you charged up through the drive home at 9am. Reasonable prices and comfy seating allow for anyone to indulge in "the good life" that has long been associated with Hollywood and the envy of social scenes everywhere. Accommodations are also available for any special occasion or event.

Advance ticket purchases and early arrival (mostly for preferred parking) are highly recommended for this popular locale- because we all know that the last thing you want to be doing on a weekend night is fight for a space that ends up being too small for your car. Dress among club patrons range from casual chic to progressive Hollywood starlet- but, please leave your tennis shoes at home (unless they’re the euro-style lace-less converse). And lastly, don’t fight with the bouncers for admittance. The club is way too big for them to pass over a cool kid to let a whiny, inexperienced, scenester into the venue.

O Harra's
A place where everybody knows your name…
Although O Harra's has traditionally been a place to catch the game, this popular hangout has integrated the characteristics of a post-study hangout, a laid back happy hour spot, and a sports rivalry meeting place for the diverse locals of Los Angeles. Its location, just blocks from UCLA, Wilshire Boulevard, and neighboring West LA, makes it easy to get to for drivers and pedestrians alike. Ample parking is available all throughout Westwood, including a flat rate lot located directly behind the joint. For those looking to add some food into their full bar and sports experience, O Harra'soffers up a variety of quick eats for your bar experience. Try the Irish Nachos (fries covered with all the fixins’ of a baked potato). Or go for the flat bread BBQ chicken pizza. Even healthy eaters can find their share of plates to feel less guilty about the carbs in their beer. Try one of O Harra'ssalads or wraps with fresh ingredients. And don’t forget to dish the dirt with Johnny and Josh. Next time you see them, they’re sure to have a story or two for you.
