"It started out simple enough: a couple glasses of wine, several shots of bourbon, and pondering what would happen if Dr. Seuss, Richard Scarry, and a stable of My Little Ponies each downed a bucket of liquid acid and proceeded to engage in an orgy that spawned a hundred love-children."
Get swept up in Phloe's fantastical creations at Lot 44 Gallery. The exhibition shows from January 11th to February 10th, 2009. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, January 14th from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. during the Downtown L.A. Artwalk.
With simple lines that design creatures with elongated or truncated bodies and appendages, Phloe creates Nevermore, a morphology of bastard animals that stare and stand defiantly. Her Nevermore characters posture like a system of clowns that are never more gleeful than when they are at their darkest. They are illustrations on the dichotomy of ponderous gaiety that is her work: all playful yet somber, frilly yet wry. Her fantastical drawing, however, is not in itself a whimsical escapade.
Phloe's imagination, fueled by Seuss and Scarry as well as a love/hate sensibility with Disney, has always been a wild source for her drawing. As Phloe states: "Nevermore is the preposterous place where such implausible creatures decided to plop themselves. Nevermore was always a tall tale; until now."
