Lineup: MALABOMBA! (5th Anniversary Show)“Ushti, ushti!” you screamed, and from underground we heard your call. And it’s time we answer back. We are shaking off the dirt, dusting off the decks, and bringing back the BOMBA! On July 25th, MALABOMBA! is thrilled to celebrate its 5TH ANNIVERSARY with you! We have thrown together a wonderfully wild night of international mayhem at a new location: the historic El Cid in Silverlake. Three bands! Two dance performances! One unforgettable night! THE BANDS: 10:30 PM LA’s own ICY HOT CLUB bring their own take on the music of Django Reinhardt. Often called “jazz manouche,” it’s vintage American swing with a thick French accent, played with astounding virtuosity. Best of all, Icy Hot Club are not mere nostalgists but top-notch players who bring their own influences and sly humor into the mix. Allez! 12 midnight VIENTO CALLEJERO blow in from east of the LA River to shake the room with their unique brand of urban cumbia. This lean, mean power trio breaks down the rhythmic and melodic pulse of Cumbia Colombiana, Son Montuno, Merengue, and rock to create a new sound that’ll move your ears, hips, and feet. Órale! 12:45 AM HOT BLOOD ORKESTAR are taking the lucky road up from San Diego to turn up the heat on the party with their electrifying renditions of traditional musics from the Balkans, Turkey, Greece and beyond. Get ready for a blast of brass and the twang of strings as hot-blooded originals mix with traditional tunes. Opa! THE DANCERS: 10:00 PM And there’s Moor! We’d be insane to ignore the beautiful Spanish-style decor at El Cid, so we’ll also treat you to our first ever floor-stomping flamenco dance performance by international baile sensation MANUEL GUTIERREZ. Tearing up tablaos since he was 8 years old, this dancer brings nothing but the fuego when he takes the stage. Olé! 11:15 PM JAYNA MANOUSHE, a second-generation bellydance artist from Cali, brings her playful and passionate raks sharqi style to our floor for a scintillating sword performance. Prepare to be mesmerized by the magnificent moves she’s honed through her work on stages all around the world touring with Jillina’s Sahlala Dancers and the Bellydance Superstars. Lilililili! 12:45 AM Joining Hot Blood Orkestar is San Diego-based bellydance artist CHANTAL. Originally from the Bay Area, Chantal studied with incredible masters and has developed her own style, fusing traditional forms from Turkey, Egypt and Central Asia. Watch the magic as she performs a spectacle of mesmerizing grace, joy and above all... FUN! DJ Jason Savvy and DJ Cat Hair will be keeping things lively all night, spinning deep cuts of Balkan brass, psychedelic cumbia, bellydance breaks, and more of what you know and love: BOMBA MUZIKA!
