Featuring small plates of inventive cooking from young chef Josef Centeno, Lazy Ox has a cozy and inviting atmosphere as well as a wait staff that knows what its doing. One of the few LA downtown restaurants in this area, Lazy Ox caters to the few brave local residents and the adventurous eaters that have caught wind of this new dining sensation. With a menu that spans many oceans the cuisine of many countries, at Lazy Ox you might nibble on fresh fried sardines from the nearby fish market, crispy pigs ears with aioli or brick-roasted mussels with homemade sriracha (Thai chili sauce). Many diners claim that Lazy Ox burgers are the best in town, served on a fresh-baked bun next to local cheeses and fresh mustard. The chalkboard menu of small plates is always changing, so patrons have the option to try fun new dishes, from ricotta fritters or crispy surf clams to roasted Brussels sprouts and a grilled cheese sandwich that puts others to shame. Lazy Ox Canteen is an unmarked dining room crammed into the ground floor of a Little Tokyo complex of condominiums but you can find it by looking for outside tables full of diners happily drinking Japanese microbrews.
